What's in a name?

This past weekend, I was fortunate to reconnect with my dear old friend Craig Dolphin on a beautiful hike along the trail at Gate 11 of the Quabbin Reservoir in Western Massachusetts. There is something truly special about spending time with someone who has been part of your story for decades — someone who knows where you came from and shares a part of your past that helped shape who you are today. The quiet woods and serene waters of the Quabbin provided the perfect backdrop to reminisce and reflect on the journey we’ve taken since our days as young Eagle Scouts.

Craig and I first met in Troop One Albion, located in Lincoln, Rhode Island. Back in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Troop One Albion was more than just a Boy Scout troop—it was a brotherhood that instilled in us values of leadership, service, and perseverance. The troop has a proud history of helping boys grow into responsible, confident young men, and it was the foundation from which our enduring friendship grew. Those summer campfires, hikes, and Scout meetings were the building blocks of experiences that we still hold dear today.

Our friendship has been a guiding light in my life. In 1991, Craig played a pivotal role in helping me move to Washington, DC. He generously opened his home to me, letting me stay on the floor of his apartment until I was able to stand on my own two feet with my first job. That kindness—it’s the kind that lasts a lifetime.

Craig Dolphin was such an inspiration in my life that when it came time to name my son, I chose to name him Craig Mellor after my longtime friend. This is a tribute to the deep and lasting impact Craig has had on me, a living reminder of the friendship and values we have shared.

As I hiked that trail at Gate 11 with Craig, I was reminded that friendships like ours are rare and precious gifts. It’s a reminder that the roots we plant in friendship and community can grow strong and steady, no matter how much time passes.

To my son Craig, I hope you find friendships that inspire you, support you, and stand the test of time—just as mine has with Craig Dolphin. Life is richer when shared with friends who become family.
